Basins for Powder Rooms
If you have a powder room or compact bathroom that you are designing, chances are you have been researching basins.
As there is normally very limited space, you need to be smart with your choice.
We’ve got some brand new innovative designs in basins for powder rooms to show you, and we can’t wait.
When the space is at a premium, you want to make sure you get the perfect piece that is beautiful and functional.
Powder rooms are not something new, but their popularity certainly is. Up until recently, many homes were built with either one main bathroom, or if you were lucky, the master bedroom also had an En-suite!
The powder room was reserved to the lobby of expensive hotels and high end mansions. However the inclusion of a powder room is pretty standard in most newer homes, and is still considered quite a luxury.
So lets explore this concept and see what’s new in design and products for this dynamic little space!
Pretty Little Rooms
Powder rooms can come in many shapes and sizes, but generally they are simply a small room with a toilet, basin and mirror.
Normally used as a guest bathroom and purely functional. No frills right – think again!
Powder rooms have taken on a life of their own, and are important in keeping your home functional and connected to the living spaces around it.
Including a powder room needs to be given some thought at the very start of your build or renovation. Even though it’s a considerably small space, it is a wet space, so costs can be similar to that of a bathroom.
Another big consideration – Where is the best place for it? Normally close to the main living and/or entertaining area is a great spot. Or if you are thinking about including a combined powder room/laundry, even better.
Full functionality is the key here. If you are combining with a laundry, you’re off to a good start. Because the laundry is a wet space as well, you will save some money on double waterproofing, plumbing, tiles, basin sinks and tapware etc.
Design Tip – Also including some cabinetry to conceal the washer & dryer is also a great way add versatility and keep your powder room looking gorgeous.
Black & Blue
Next up, lets think about choosing the fixtures and fittings. Your choices are definitely guided by your available space. And generally speaking, most things in a powder room tend to be on the smaller side.
Choosing basins for powder rooms is a major part of the design and versatility. There is so much to think about in relation to the floor plan and proportion of everything.
A standard bathroom basin may be too large and out of proportion for the space. Luckily, there are specific basins for powder rooms! Phew!
Choosing a colour palette or style for your powder room can also be quite daunting. Generally people tend to go for white or a neutral palette to make the room look larger. But this isn’t always the case. If you do have a small powder room, try a darker palette.
This can actually have an enlarging effect because it is such a small space. And because all your other features will be a more modest size, you can afford to be daring.
Try a beautiful brushed brass mini wall mounted sink, matte black tapware, black feature tiles and some timber accents to soften the space a little. This look can have a cocoon effect and envelope the user.

The inclusion of a powder room also gives you a little space where you can be creative! You can go one of two ways…you can either echo the bathrooms in the rest of your home or you can go rogue!!
The detail in this room can make it or break it. So make sure you tick all the ‘functionality’ boxes first. Proportions, size, layout – these are all important details that need to be taken into consideration.
But once that’s done, it’s time to get to the fun stuff! This is a place where you can buy that expensive feature tile, or that stunning tapware that you’ve had your eye one…it’s a small space, so you can afford to go a little off budget right?
Try out that pink terrazzo tile, go for all black walls, install that glamorous brushed brass basin you’ve been crushing on…you deserve it!

Last but definitely not least, lets check out a new style of mini basin sinks in coloured metals.
Yep, just when you thought you’d seen every basin for powder rooms, along comes an innovative design. Made from stainless steel, they are lightweight, can be made into various shapes and can also be coated in various treatments and colours.
We may be biased, but we are so excited about introducing stainless steel mini basins. They are designed specifically for compact bathrooms and powder rooms, and even hide part of the unsightly plumbing!
And when they can come in finishes like brushed brass, copper and gunmetal, we know you’ll find one that is perfect for your next project!
