Finding the Perfect Bathroom Basin is Not As Easy As It Looks
You may be forgiven for thinking that choosing the perfect bathroom basin is easy.
After all, it’s kind of a small element within the grand scheme of your bathroom – or is it?
There are a few things to consider when choosing this all-important piece.
Don’t worry, we’re here to help! We’ve got loads of inspo AND expert tips on how to make a perfect choice…
Single or Double Basins
One of the first choices you will need to make is, are you going with single or double bathroom basins? This can be one of the trickiest decisions because we all love the idea of a luxurious bathroom with double sinks right? But sometimes it’s just not possible. There are many factors here, the size of the bathroom, cost, and function to name a few. But rest assured, single bathroom basins will still give you a high functioning bathroom or ensuite.
The most important thing here, is to be realistic about what you can achieve in the available space. Double basins may look overwhelming in a small ensuite, while a single basin sink might look underwhelming in a generous family sized main bathroom.
Bench Top VS Under Mount
You might already know what option you are leaning towards, so this is really just a matter of personal taste, and the overall style you’re going for.
If you are looking for a minimal, sleek design, then you are probably in favour of the under-mount bathroom basin. There are many benefits to this mounting option:
- Minimal look and feel
- Cleaning is easy
- More benchtop space
Or maybe you prefer the look of the benchtop mounted bathroom basin. Come on, what’s not to love!
- An extra design element to showcase
- More cost-effective to install
- Lots of styles/colours/materials to choose from
- It can become the showstopper of the space
Getting the Size Right
This is one of those crucial decisions as well. Too big and it won’t fit on your vanity correctly, too small and it can leave the bathroom looking a bit sparse.
So how do you choose the perfect size bathroom sink? It all comes down to proportion. By choosing your vanity first, this will give you the best guide to getting your bathroom basin in the right size.
If you are having double basins, make sure you leave ample space between each sink. A certain amount of space is required below for the regulation plumbing underneath, but other than that, just make sure you have the right amount of space on your benchtop for day to day practicalities.
Maybe you’re going for a single basin due to space restrictions. You also have a few options on where to mount the sink. You can either centre it or have it off-centre to give you more useable space on your benchtop.
Expert Tip – Check your bathroom vanity or cabinetry prior to deciding on the mounting position of the basin sink. Generally there are cut-outs in the cabinetry to allow for your plumbing to fit. This can be centred, right or left aligned, so confirm this before ordering, as you may not be left with an option once you’ve purchased.
Finding The Right Materials
While we may find ourselves thinking more about how our new bathroom basin looks, we should also consider how it feels and how to maintain it, so it will look perfect in the future.
Solid Surface – a popular and relatively newcomer to the scene, this amazing material is man-made and has many benefits. It’s very strong, wears well, is easy to maintain and can even be repaired in some circumstances. Long-lasting with a luxurious feel…there aren’t many downsides to this beautiful, modern material.
Stone or Marble – a true classic and it’s easy to see why. With their unique and natural qualities, they are pure luxury. With a little maintenance and care, they will bring an indulgent and timeless feel to your space. We recommend pre-sealing with a natural stone sealant to keep it looking beautiful.
Concrete – who would have thought we’d be swooning over a concrete bathroom basin 10 years ago! But we love the raw, natural beauty that they can bring. Just make sure you choose one from a reputable manufacturer. Generally easy to clean and maintain, but they can crack and chip. We adore the range of new colours & styles that are popping up!
Metallics aka Stainless Steel – one of our favourites! There are so many benefits to using metals for your bathroom basin. Apart from the fact that they are stunning to look at, they are so easy to clean and maintain, won’t chip or crack and come in an amazing array of styles and finishes. If you’re looking for a showstopper, this option is for you…the hardest part is choosing the perfect colour!
