Okay, so it’s the New Year, time to kick some old habits and get your bathroom space sorted out once and for all…
First things first. Once you have decided it’s definitely time to detox and declutter your bathroom, you just need to follow a few simple steps to complete your bathroom cleanse!
Try our quick and easy “ABI 4-Step Program” to obtain a perfectly clean, healthy, and beautiful bathroom space.
Don’t be tempted to miss any steps though, otherwise you may relapse into bad bathroom vibes!!
Lets be real people – you know you’ve got a tiny amount of moisturiser left in that jar at the back of your vanity drawer, but can’t bring yourself to throw it out? We’ve all been there. Well, it’s good news, we’re here to help you get over the guilt of not clearing out your bathroom space for a while.
STEP 1 – Grab a couple of cardboard boxes or shopping bags and start by removing every single thing that isn’t bolted down. And we mean EVERYTHING! This is the most overwhelming part, so let’s get it over with!!
Take it all to another room or space where you have room to take it all out. Lay it out on the floor or even your kitchen benchtop. Just make sure it’s somewhere that you can literally see everything you’ve removed.
Next, look at each product and see if it has expired? All moisturisers, sunscreens, lotions and make-up have an expiry date. So if it’s been hanging out in the back of the cupboard for over 12 mths and you haven’t used it, chances are, it has expired and could actually be toxic.
Don’t be tempted to use it, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Expired products can cause you nasty irritations or reactions. We recommend discarding it, to be on the safe side.
Be brutal and honest with yourself. Remember, your trying to declutter your bathroom, so if you forgot you even had it, chances are, you can live without it…

Before you move onto Step 2, that bathroom needs a thorough clean. Grab your cleaning products, put on some music and scrub every nook and crannie of the space. This is also a major part of the declutter process, so don’t skip this one!
Once you have gone through every item from the bathroom, it’s time to sort them into a few categories. Try breaking it down into these kind of categories:
- Body Products
- Cleaning Products
- Spare Linen etc
Once you have a couple of categories, you need to break it down again into things you use daily, often and rarely. Start by thinking about your daily routine. What’s the first thing you do after your shower? Brush your teeth, apply moisturiser, apply makeup, do your hair? Whatever your routine, keep the things you use every single day, to one side.
Then think about things you might use every few days, and things you might only use weekly or fortnightly and put them into separate categories.
Of course you want to keep the things that you use daily, handy. Try keeping those things within easy reach or in the top drawer of your bathroom vanity. Group the other things that can be stored in lower drawers or further toward the back of your vanity cupboards.
Design Tip – Store things like makeup brushes in a cute storage cup on top of the vanity as a styling piece.

You remember those little Russian babushka dolls that stack into each other, well try and think of your storage this way as well.
Check out what storage space you already have available. If you have a large bathroom vanity, or a storage cupboard in or near your bathroom, you’re in luck!
You’ll be surprised at just how much storage you actually have, once you start to utilise it well. Take some measurements of your space and some of the items that you want to put into storage containers or vessels. There’s nothing worse than buying a cute basket or container, only to get it home and find your items don’t fit into it…
Once you’ve done that, hit the internet. Don’t just check out bathroom storage – also look at things like kitchen and office storage. You’ll be surprised by what you might find!
Things like large, clear kitchen storage containers and rattan woven baskets are perfect in a bathroom. Not only will it keep your products tidy, you can use them as part of your overall styling pieces. Things like stackable desk trays for rolled up hand towels, facewashers and bathtowels are also a great idea. Another classic idea is to use cute pen holders to keep your makeup brushes on display.
You can even go one step further and label the containers or baskets. There are loads of pre-made labels on the market now, that will get your Marie Kondo instincts kicking in!!
WARNING: Storage and organisation has become a phenomenon, and you may have trouble stopping once you get started. You may catch the declutter bug!

Now that you have gone through the steps to declutter your bathroom and all the hard work is done, we can get into the fun part of re-styling!
If you have a large bathroom vanity, you want to be mindful of how many items you want on the benchtop. You don’t want to go and un-do all that hard work you’ve just put in.
Think about how you truly use the space…do you like having all your lotions and potions on display next to your basin? Or do you prefer to keep it practical and have everything tucked away and out of sight?
Be mindful that you’re probably going to need to keep items like hand wash and toothbrushes within easy reach, so try and choose gorgeous vessels for these things. Some hand wash now comes in it’s own cute packaging, so you don’t even need to put it into your own dispenser – bonus!
Are you a person that loves the idea of a few little luxuries in your bathroom? Like candles, plants, fluffy towels, even artwork? Well this is your chance to let out your inner stylist. You’ll be surprised at how moving a cute candle into your fresh bathroom, can have quite an impact!
Try and keep it relatively practical though. Remember, it’s is still a space that requires huge functionality and practicality, and you don’t want to detract from that.
Put in all your styling elements and live with them for a few days and see how the space feels. If it’s feeling too bare, add one more piece. If it’s feeling cluttered again, take out something that isn’t quite working for you.
