A Beautiful Nightmare
Designing a kitchen can mean one of two things for most people – one of the most exciting things ever, or their worst nightmare coming to life!
If you’ve ever listened to your friends and family, they will usually share their previous experiences with kitchen design or renovations and it can have you chomping at the bit, or have you running in the opposite direction.
Fear not, we’ve got you…we’re going to take you through what we feel are the 5 Essentials to Create A Timeless Kitchen.
We’ll show you some gorgeous designs, styles and products that will have you calling your cabinetmaker A.S.A.P!
Location, Location, Location!
If you are building a new home and you have the choice of where to locate your kitchen within the plans, there are a couple of things to consider.
Ideally, you want the kitchen to be filled with natural light, and be located close to your living area and your outdoor living space as well.
Natural light is one design element that you want to include in this space, as the whole family spends so much time gathering here, it helps to make it as inviting as possible.
It also provides you with the ultimate starting point, and a blank canvas for the rest of your design.
If however you are renovating your kitchen and it can’t be relocated in your floorplan, you still have some options to incorporate more natural light…Windows or glass sliders are the most common ways to bring in light, but we have another exciting option. One word – skylight!
Skylights are the perfect solution to introduce this element and expose the true potential of the design. They are also a relatively cost effective way to achieve a light, beautiful kitchen.
Depending on the location and size of your kitchen, another option you may be able to consider here is a window splashback…which we’ll go into more depth a little later.

Style and Set
Okay, you have the location and natural light covered, now let’s think about the style of your timeless kitchen.
You may be forgiven for thinking that you need to choose a classic colour like white for your kitchen, but more and more, we are seeing modern take’s on kitchens from era’s gone by. Proving that some styles never go out of fashion.
Things like timbers, marble and coloured tapware are receiving a revamp in kitchen designs. And with modern technologies and innovations, these products are sure to stand the test of time.
If however you prefer to opt for classic white kitchen, think about using the materials, construction methods and designs to create texture, interest and detail.
Maybe some curved cabinetry, textured cabinetry, tactile marble or engineered stones, and gorgeous handmade tiles.
Your timeless kitchen will have touches of modern style, while still keeping the palette light and fresh.
Design Tip – Don’t forget to incorporate lighting as another design element. By including some functional, detailed lighting, you can create an impact and add interest, which can totally transform the space.

Sink or Swim
Without a doubt, the kitchen sink and tapware are two of the hardest working pieces in the kitchen. So if you are trying to create a timeless kitchen, you may feel that you need to go with chrome…think again!
In days gone by chrome seemed to be our only option, so a lot of the kitchen design and colours were well suited to pair with this classic finish. BUT, thankfully we have more and more options available to us.
If you are keeping your cabinetry, benchtops and backsplash in a neutral colour, why not introduce something more vibrant with your sink and tapware? There are so many sizes, styles and finishes that you may have a hard time choosing just one!
Do you need a double sink with drainer, a single sink, or how about an oversized farmhouse sink? And what about the colour – maybe something like a bold brushed brass finish, or if you prefer a modern take on the classics, try the understated elegance of gunmetal.
Chances are, this could be one of the harder decisions of your final design, so take some time and play around with samples to finalise your palette.
Design Tip – Most companies now offer samples that you can purchase, so you can see the true colour, feel and finish of the products. Try leaving the samples in the actual kitchen space for a few days, so you will see how they look in different light throughout the whole day.
Make a Splash
Your kitchen splashback is also another area where you can have a little (or a lot!) of fun…this is the place where you can really let your style shine through.
Again, try and choose a material that you feel will have longevity. This means something with great functionality, and style!

You might not think of these important little details when you’re in the midst of choosing benchtops, splashbacks and sinks, but kitchen accessories are quite important in the overall functionality of your new kitchen design.
If you have opted for a double sink without a drainer, a handy accessory is a roll up kitchen mat/drainer. These innovative pieces will become a big part of your new space.
Simply keep it in a cupboard under the sink and roll it out when doing the washing up. OR, keep it out permanently as a beautiful styling element. Form and function!
You won’t know how you lived without this next one…a sink colander!
This nifty little accessory has become an essential part of many kitchens across the globe, and with good reason.
Designed specifically to fit perfectly across the sink for a minimal, yet cohesive feel. It is the ultimate companion in the kitchen, allowing you to safely and easily drain off foods, and rinse foods before cooking, it really is so handy!
