Or maybe you have a laundry that has seen better days…well, do we have news for you!
We’re going to show you some of the top laundry ideas for 2019, so go and sort your whites from your colours and take a load off!
Before you start planning your next build or renovation, have you thought about the laundry design?
Chances are that it may not be at the top of your list when it comes to choosing the elements and finishes in here. You don’t immediately think of dreamy flooring, soft curtains and the perfect appliances…but laundries are becoming one of the most important rooms in the home.
With our busy family and work lives, we want these spaces to be versatile, functional and connected. We need this zone to be as streamlined as possible in the quest for minimising the amount of time doing mundane chores like the washing & ironing!
If you are thinking about revamping your current home, we’ve got some great ideas and tips on laundry design, along with some beautiful examples of the best laundries of 2019.
Let There Be Light
We know it, that feeling that you get when you finally see the laundry of your dreams. The pressure is real!
And a dream laundry is slightly different for each person, but there is a bit of formula for achieving that perfect laundry.
First off, you need a generous amount of space. Again, this can vary, but try and get as much out of your floor plan as possible. If there is an area on either side of your current laundry space that you could combine, like a linen cupboard, or entrance – why not knock down some walls and make it super functional.
By combining two spaces into one, you have the potential to transform it into an extra large laundry, while still incorporating your linen storage, mudroom, or even a powder room. We love double-duty rooms!
Design Tip – Double up on everything where you can. Double sink for soaking and cleaning, double cabinetry – under bench and overhead cabinetry is the optimal for uber storage, and double space for your washer & dryer.

Light filled laundries are the ultimate in laundry design! There is something serene about a beautiful space where the natural light is streaming in.
And the laundry is no exception. When you are trying to come up with laundry ideas, really try to consider the amount of available light, and where best to position plumbing, appliances, cabinetry etc.
This can have a big impact on your laundry design. If there is no existing window, you may also want to consider placing a window above the sink/folding area, as this will help to open up the area and make it more a more pleasant place to do chores.
Another major element of your laundry design is the flooring. Like every other wet space in your home, the area needs to be waterproofed and some durable flooring is in order. Gorgeous tiles are the usual go-to here, but there are many hybrid floating flooring systems on the market now that can be used in wetspaces. So if you love the look and feel of something natural like timber, why not give it a try in the laundry!
Again, try and get the most out of the space by including cabinetry, open cupboards, or open shelving filled with gorgeous baskets for maximum storage
Design Tip – If you are renting, try contacting your landlord to see if you can install some open or floating shelving. This is a really easy, cost-effective way of updating a tired laundry, whilst giving you extra storage and an interesting design element.

In High Demand
When you have a busy family and work life, you want to squeeze as much efficiency and functionality out of every part of your home.
The laundry is one room where this is imperative. This should be part of the master plan when you are considering your new laundry design. Think outside the box here, and you will be amazed at how much time and energy you can save, if you get a few things right up front.
Try and include some of the following, and you’re well on your way to a laundry that will run like a well oiled machine:
- Double Sinks – This can be a lifesaver if you have little ones. It’s ideal for soaking, while still having an available sink for rinsing, cleaning, filling the mop bucket etc
- Drying Rack – invaluable for drying permanent press, delicate’s, or if you are trying to save energy and not using a dryer
- Fold Out Ironing Board – we’ve all dreamt of it, and they can be a reality! Relatively inexpensive in the scheme of things, a fold out ironing board is an ingenious idea for saving space, and creating efficiency.
- Integrated Laundry Hamper – ideal for those pesky items that need to be washed at a later stage, or while you’re waiting to gather enough whites/colours for a full load – love this!!

Okay, we understand that it’s not always possible to have a light, breezy laundry. But there is a way that you can still achieve a beautifully lit laundry design.
Again, you just need to get creative with your laundry ideas and think outside the box. Mirrors are the perfect design element to help in making a space feel larger and bounce around light. And the larger the mirror, the better!
This can also be a game-changer if you have decided to combine your laundry and powder room as we mentioned earlier. An oversized mirror will be perfect for your guests when using the powder room, and can help to make it feel less like a laundry.
A bold colour or design will also help to make the combined space feel like a powder room or mud room. The eye will be drawn to that feature tile, wall colour or gorgeous tapware, and your guests might even miss the fact that it’s a laundry!
Design Tip – Try integrating your washer and dryer to really streamline the space and make it beautiful at the same time. Include a luxe handwash, linens and a cute potted plant to really enhance the luxurious feel.
While you may not be able to renovate or build your dream laundry right now, there is always going to be a new trend or innovation to follow.
Keep a moodboard, pin images on social media, tear out pages from design magazines and develop a real sense of what you want and need in your laundry design.
