The Caulfield Clinic project aimed to create a welcoming, home-like feel within a fully compliant commercial clinic.
“Selecting ABI Interiors' new Aliro range was the logical design choice in bringing the feel of domestic luxury into the bathrooms that were also required to be fully access compliant,” says Sonia Sarangi, Director and Architect of Andever.
“Our practice ethos at Andever is for accessible design to go beyond the purely functional, it needs to be beautiful as well.”
The brief was to convert an inter-war home into an Allied Health (Psychology) clinic, utilising planning overlays that allowed for a change of use to medical facilities along major suburban roads.
“Our initial review of their brief revealed that the original cellular plan would be an asset. Furthermore, the excellent condition of the existing building fabric and its richness of domestic detail was crucial to retain and leverage. Yet doing so, whilst meeting strict disability access requirements, would be a significant challenge.”
External work focused on adding parking for patients and clinicians at the rear and creating accessible pathways to the main entrance, while preserving 90% of the original dwelling through smart design.
“We wanted internal wayfinding to be simple yet distinct. This was done using colour along common circulation areas, contrasted with the rich existing detail within the individual consult rooms. Keeping and enhancing the rich details was vital in order to support patient comfort, well-being, and care.”
Sonia says: “The extensive use of natural tones is a subtle nod to nature, […] over time, the renewed landscaping at the front of the property will mature and further support the overall patient experience.”
