Kazoku House by The Sociable Weaver
Kazoku
Kazoku—meaning family in Japanese—is the guiding principle behind The Sociable Weaver’s thoughtfully designed Northcote home. More than just a nod to traditional Japanese architecture, this residence reflects a lifestyle rooted in harmony with nature, offering a tranquil retreat amid the energy of inner-city Melbourne.

At its core, sustainable design elements lay the foundation for Kazoku’s eco-conscious framework.
Passive solar design and north-facing windows allow a large deciduous tree to filter sunlight—offering shade in summer and warmth in winter, naturally reducing energy costs.
Charred timber cladding, inspired by traditional Japanese techniques, repels termites and increases fire resistance. An internal courtyard, solar panels, and clever eco-innovations support the home’s impressive 7.5-star energy rating.
