Tiles FAQs
What is a rectified edge?
Rectified edge tiles are precisely cut to create perfectly straight, sharp edges. This allows these tiles to be laid with minimal grout lines, creating a seamless look. These tiles are ideal for installations where precise alignment is important, making them easier to install with consistent spacing.
What is the difference between a natural edge and an organic edge?
Tiles with a natural edge maintain the irregular, rough contours of the original material, such as stone or wood, which gives them a more authentic look. An organic edge is more freeform and curved, producing a softer aesthetic.
What is a honed tile?
A honed tile has a surface that has been ground down slightly to achieve a consistent, smooth texture and a finish that ranges from matte to satin. It is less reflective than a polished finish and offers improved scratch resistance.
What is a slip rating?
Ensuring safety in all environments is paramount, and determining a tile's suitability for its intended application is made easier through slip resistance ratings. Tile slip ratings are a collection of tests used to assess the slip resistance of a tile’s surface. The most common slip resistance tests include:
Pendulum Test: Assesses the friction a floor surface offers when a foot comes into contact with it. Pendulum classifications range from P0 to P5. The higher the number, the lower the risk of slipping.
| Pendulum Classification | Slip Risk | Slip Resistance |
| P0 | Very High Risk | Very Low Slip Resistance |
| P1 | Very High Risk | Very Low Slip Resistance |
| P2 | High Risk | Low Slip Resistance |
| P3 | Moderate Risk | Moderate Slip Resistance |
| P4 | Low Risk | High Slip Resistance |
| P5 | Very Low Risk | Very High Slip Resistance |
Oil-wet ramp test: Assesses the degree of slip resistance when coming in contact with a lubricated angled surface. Resistance values range from R9 to R13. The higher the number, the lower the risk of slipping.
| Slip Resistance Value | Slip Risk |
| R9 | Very High |
| R10 | Very High |
| R11 | High |
| R12 | Moderate |
| R13 | Low |
How do I determine whether my tiles can be used internally or externally?
Check the ABI Interiors product page to determine whether tiles can be used internally or externally, as this will differ based on the tile's construction.
How do I determine if my tiles can be used on the floor or wall?
You can check the ‘Specifications’ tab on the related ABI Interiors product page to determine whether your tiles can be used for the floor or wall.
Are tiles waterproof?
While tiles are generally water-resistant, their waterproof capability depends on the type of tile and how they are sealed. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are usually highly water-resistant and suitable for wet areas, while natural stone tiles usually require a waterproof sealant to prevent water absorption.
Will tiles stick to painted walls?
Tiles can stick to painted walls if the paint is non-glossy, clean, and properly prepared. Using a suitable primer and adhesive designed for painted surfaces is essential for a strong bond. Please speak to a professional tradesperson to ensure the correct installation of your tiles.
Why do tiles suddenly pop up?
There are many reasons why tiles may start popping up. This could relate to issues such as inadequate adhesive application, moisture damage, or fluctuations in temperature and humidity, which cause expansion and contraction. Other reasons could include poor surface preparation and using the wrong adhesive. Always appoint a professional tradesperson for the installation of your tiles.
What is a tumbled tile or edge?
A tile that is tumbled has been put through a mechanical finishing process that gently abrades and knocks its edges and corners inside a rotating drum. The result is a tile whose edge and/or surface are intentionally weathered and irregular rather than crisp and sharp.
What is a bevelled tile?
Bevelled-edge tiles have their edges cut on a slight angle, so when they’re laid side-by-side a neat “V” groove appears between each tile. This angled edge adds depth \and gives walls—especially splashbacks and feature areas—a refined, classic look.
Which tiles can I install with under-floor heating?
Porcelain tiles are suitable for application with under-floor heating and have excellent heat conductivity and durability. Natural stone tiles are also suitable for application with under-floor heating as they have great heat retention; however, they will take longer to warm than a porcelain tile.
How do I determine which tiles are best for my project?
Selecting your tiles is often determined by the size of your space, personal preference, and taste. However, here are a few tips:
- Large-format tiles have a minimal appearance, fewer grout lines, low maintenance, and easy installation, making them a popular choice in larger spaces. They are typically available in sizes 300x600mm, 600x600mm, and 1200x600mm.
- Smaller format tiles can achieve a visually creative look and are ideal for covering small areas such as splashbacks, curved surfaces, and bathroom areas. These are typically tiles in sizes 480mm up to a larger 250x60mm and are available in various shapes.
