Wastes themselves do not act as overflow prevention. When the waste or plug is pushed down (closed), the basin will fill and can potentially overflow. As the basin fills, any excess flows through the overflow outlet and into the waste pipe at a rate of 9L per minute — helping to prevent the water from spilling over.
When the waste is open and the basin is clear of blockages, water should drain normally without reaching the overflow level.
