A Wrap-Up of 2022’s Interior Design Trends

At the end of last year, we envisioned 2022 would be a more exciting and daring exploration into interior design. As the world began to open up again, we picked certain elements that reflected this sense of liberation.

The impressive property on Gilmore Street in Tarragindi offers darker contrasts on the exterior, with warm neutrals blanketing the interior. While the home doesn’t feature striking colourful walls, it’s certainly a wonderland of texture. The international fusion of French provincial and Mediterreanean styles means that the home sees textural interior design trends, including French limestone, marble, brushed brass, and timber. 

This home blends classic and contemporary expertly, with a strong emphasis on angular shapes. Softening the sharp scheme, large format windows in almost every room have direct views to either the green lawn or green plant wall — colouring the interiors with a sense of the outdoors. 

The rise in biophilia in an emerging post-COVID era has cemented itself as an important interior design trend of 2022 — and Gilmore Street adopts this quality into the design.

Gilmore Street displays a bold design choice that we have seen gaining traction this year throughout homes around the world. Mixing metals can be executed in a way that doesn’t feel out of place by noticing the tones in your home and expanding on that through your fixtures. 

Often, the design scheme favours a single finish in one room and differs in another — so the fixture colours have their own domain to contribute to the atmosphere. 

Otsu House in Casuarina was contextualised around openness and connection. It embraces its oceanside location with pride, offering a warm Mediterranean feel. 

The appreciation for nature is one of the top interior design trends of this residence. Base Building Concepts ensured the materials they used could withstand the environment, including Japanese otsumigaki clay. 

As a coastal home, the interior is relatively neutral in order to emphasise views of the outdoors. One of the bathrooms livens by adopting a bright warm terracotta statement wall as part of 2022’s bathroom interior design trends.

Whether used indoors or outdoors, the craze for crazy pave stonework surged in 2022, cementing it as one of the most popular interior design trends. It works effortlessly in coastal schemes but can be adopted into numerous styles.

Lending itself from Palm Springs architectural sensibilities, Palmera explores various tile and stone textures, offering an exciting variance among the neutral palette. 

The modern coastal interior includes a sage statement wall in the laundry and brown mosaic patterning in the bathroom, bringing life to typically practical areas. 

Surrounding the perimeter of the home are manicured Palm Springs-style gardens featuring hardy cactus and snake plants. Windows to the bright gardens deliberately frame the views, creating an animated contrast.

Curves were a large feature of 2021 interior design trends, which naturally carried into this year. Though, to expand on that concept, we saw a handful of curved rangehoods appearing in kitchens. This style element is perfect for spaces that also include a curved island bench, as the shape can be continued into the overall aesthetic.

Ruin X caused a stir upon launching in the Gold Coast area. The contemporary Mediterranean-style home was unlike anything else on the market.

Its most pointed feature is the use of rendering, which blankets almost the entire home in a grounding texture. 

The home celebrates an eccentric flair with bespoke niche walls and brushed copper fixtures that contribute to Ruin X’s point of difference.

Mediterranean interior design was easily the most popular style this year, with homeowners rejoicing in the minimalistic and coastal crossover around the world. Its most distinctive qualities include light, rendered walls and natural materials such as timber. Mediterranean design isn’t just reserved for coastal locations – have a look at Casa Del Sol in the hills of New Zealand.

In October, Kooringal Lodge was the most searched home on realestate.com.au. 

It quickly captured the attention of the online world with its moody modern cabin aesthetic and industrial-style interiors. While not colourful in typical measures, the boldness of black walls permeates throughout the home, which is an avenue not often taken. 

Kooringal displays a combination of stone, timber, and brushed gunmetal finishes, creating the perfect balance between dark and warm. The many windows and skylights allow the lush surroundings to become a prominent feature of the interiors.

White and light interiors have dominated homes for a long time, but the rise of darker palettes made a strong entrance into 2022. Deeper hues can actually make a space feel limitless and add an air of luxury. It gives the eye somewhere to land and creates a strong sense of contrast which livens an interior scheme.
