Inspired by Modern Spanish Architecture, Volière is an Entertainer’s Dream

Behind the Design

Voliere-by-BC-Developments

Bienvenido — welcome to Volière.

Conceptualised by Jayson Pate Design, and brought to life by BC Developments, this two-storey home strikes a delicate balance between earthbound stillness and sky-high ascent. Inspired by modern Spanish architecture — reinterpreted through a contemporary Australian lens — this home was designed as a departure from the ordinary in the tranquil pocket of Burleigh Waters, Gold Coast.

Join us as we sit down with Brad, Co-founder of BC Developments, to discuss the inspiration, execution, and design expertise of Volière.

Though originally inspired by the home's street name, Bellbird Ave, the further the project evolved, the more fitting its title became. French for ‘bird’, Volière speaks to the soaring ceilings and sunken living zones, creating a rhythm of elevation and repose where your sense of scale is quietly disarmed—just like a bird in flight. Yet, the sunken lounge room and outdoor firepit serve another, more literal, purpose: Perspective.

“The sunken lounge area as you walk in the front door was a real focal point for our design. It was non-negotiable,” says Brad. “When you walk through the front door, you look straight out into the glass pool.”

Neutral Italian oak cabinetry wraps seamlessly around the kitchen and island, concealing storage behind a harmonious, pared-back façade. The triangle island bench is undoubtedly the focal point, its pointed edges drawing sightlines toward two defining spaces — the sunken lounge room on one end, and the outdoor entertaining area on the other — anchoring the home’s fluid connection between indoors and out.

Square mosaic tiles in a cloud-like hue form a soft, textured backdrop — a quiet canvas that allows the kitchen's sculptural elements to take centre stage. Brushed copper tapware punctuates the palette with warmth, while the arched curve of the Elysian Commercial Pull-Out Tap introduces a subtle contrast to the room's linear geometry.

Through expansive stackable doors, the blurred boundary between indoors and out is realised — the outdoor entertaining zone unfolding like a private rooftop of a swanky resort.

A sprawling BBQ area and outdoor lounge offer a welcome reprieve from the Queensland sun, framed by glass balustrades to preserve the architectural vision without compromise. Down half a rise, a sunken fire pit and pool area beckon beneath an open pergola roof—a defining element of modern Spanish architecture.

While the sunken fire pit offers a level of luxury few homes can claim, it's the elevated glass-walled pool that cements this outdoor space as an entertainer’s dream. The seamless flow between fire pit and pool invites long summer afternoons that linger into dusk, where every moment feels effortlessly refined.

Echoing the kitchen’s palette, natural Italian oak cabinetry carries through to the bedrooms and bathrooms, creating a sense of cohesion and warmth throughout the home. In contrast to the prevailing linear forms, BC Developments introduces moments of curvature through our brushed copper tapware — from the Gooseneck Hob Swivel Spout to the Floor Mounted Bath Filler and Lola Basin Sink — adding a moment of sculptural nuance to each space.

True to the ethos of modern Spanish architecture, beauty is found in texture and touch. The bathrooms honour this philosophy with ribbed glass privacy screens in the master ensuite paired with the subtle grooves of our Namika tapware. Tactile interplay is further anchored by floor-to-ceiling stonework, creating a space that feels grounding and connected with its Mediterranean influence.

“I've been using ABI for a few years now,” says Brad. “I love the copper colour, but I’ve never used the Namika products before— it really tied everything together.”

“We went with a stone insert in the benchtop throughout all the bathrooms,” says Brad. “It complements that Spanish architecture feel and it really is the first thing you see when you walk into every bathroom.”

From the grey-toned Venetian plaster to the stone-clad feature walls, BC Developments and Jayson Pate Design weave a poetic dialogue between modern Spanish architecture and Australian coastal sensibilities, grounding this Burleigh Waters residence in both place and craftsmanship.

“From start to finish, this project was one of my favourites to ever work on—it was quite seamless,” says Brad. “The product that we came up with was exactly what we had envisioned from the start, and we are super happy with it.”
