Embracing Brutalist Architecture in Australia by the Founders of Valley Eyewear | Behind The Design

ABI Interiors

Welcome to Our Sabbath Home, an entrancing masterpiece that harmoniously blends brutalist architecture with artistic vision. Owned by Tenielle and Michael Crawley, founders of the renowned Valley Eyewear, this residence showcases their impeccable taste and commitment to creating a unique living space. Join us as we delve into the captivating world they have crafted, where darkness, concrete, and art seamlessly intertwine.

Embracing an approach outside the norm, Michael and Tenielle aimed to bring brutalist architecture to the coastal suburb of Palm Beach, Gold Coast. This architectural style, known for its raw concrete aesthetic, bold geometric forms, and emphasis on functionality, perfectly embodies their desire to create something different and reflective of their personalities.

Our Sabbath Home embraces brutalist architecture in Australia and infuses it with a touch of darkness and timeless elegance. The dark interiors, a hallmark of the Crawley’s style, create an intriguing atmosphere that also feels homely. By carefully selecting materials and colour palettes, they have ensured that their home remains relevant and visually striking for years to come.

Within the walls of Our Sabbath Home, you'll find a symphony of brutalist design elements. The off-form concrete centre hallway, weighing a staggering 27 tonnes, serves as the backbone of the house. Its angular lines and robust structure add depth and character, as if the house itself is a work of art.

The gunmetal fixtures further enhance the boldness of the design. Tenielle emphasises the importance of choosing ABI Interiors' brushed gunmetal range for its timeless appeal and ability to complete the black aesthetic of the residence. She states, "... it was really important for us that we built a home that was not going to show the age, and we really feel that the gunmetal, it will always be... in trend, yeah, and I think it actually complements the black." Echoing her sentiment, Michael adds, "It's very timeless."

Tenielle and Michael Crawley's art passion is on display at Our Sabbath Home. Treating their residence as an art gallery, they have curated an impressive collection, including one of David Bromley's largest paintings. The house becomes a canvas where architecture and art harmoniously intertwine, creating an environment that astounds but also feels welcoming.

While brutalist architecture may evoke a sense of austerity, the Crawleys have successfully infused warmth and hospitality into Our Sabbath Home. The strategic use of greenery, planter boxes, and gardens softens the concrete structure, creating a tranquil and inviting oasis. The result is a space that feels like a second home to family and friends, fostering a sense of belonging and comfort.
