SEVEN DESIGN HACKS TO MAKE A SMALL BATHROOM FEEL BIGGER
As the world gets bigger, spaces get smaller. A restriction on physical room doesn’t have to limit your bounds of creativity; it just asks for a different perspective. We understand that it can be difficult, as our desires for grandeur in the bathroom require space, but there can be ways to adhere that to the walls of a petite bathroom. So we’ve brainstormed seven design hacks for small bathrooms to help expand your vision.
1. MIRROR CABINETS
Some vanities are truly vain. They look great (and they know it) but give nothing back to you. So, if you’re strapped for counter-space, allow the generosity of an elegant mirror cabinet to hold your possessions with care. Tucked away behind your reflection, watch yourself smile as you retrieve your toothbrush, cleanser, or cologne, knowing you have killed two birds with one fantastic stone.
Our Eva Round Mirror Cabinets would especially love to live in your bathroom, and you can meet them here.
2. MINI TAPWARE AND SINKS
Having a disproportionately large sink or tap in your small bathroom conquers space without abandon. You’re left wounded with no wiggle room, and your bathroom becomes a state of tyranny. Not to fear, we have arranged a rescue team to retrieve some space: mini fixtures! Installing a dainty sink and tap lets your bathroom take a breath, without compromising on function.
We have an entire range of mini fixtures at ABI, including our new Bajo sink! Say hello to our little friends here.
3. FLOATING VANITY
For the love of space, no more clunky-counters, please. Especially in a sweet little bathroom. A floating vanity on the other hand, can take roominess to new heights. That extra block of space underneath can make a bathroom feel more expansive. If you don’t need that much storage, opt for a minimalistic floating plank. It adds a beautiful architectural element, and if you have a good-looking bottle trap like our Marli, it has the chance to be adored – as it should! If you still need a place to put your personals, there are heaps of floating vanities with drawers or cabinets, so you’re always looked after.

4. RECESSED WALL NICHES
Recessed wall niches have the market obsessed. Highly customisable to any geometric shape you desire, everyone loves the primordial beauty they bring into the home. In a small bathroom, they can be a godsend for storage and decorating, allowing no protrusions from the wall. They’re instrumental in the shower, as your rendition of every Mariah Carey song available can reverberate fully, without you knocking into anything.

5. GLASS SHOWER DOORS
Opaque shower curtains and doors plunge a big stop-sign into the flow of your small bathroom. Sure, it doesn’t impact the physical dimensions, but it greatly impacts feel. The transparent barriers of glass shower doors give the illusion of space, while still containing water to its designated spot. It also shows off your beautiful shower and any tile patterns, exhibiting your bathroom’s overall artistic quality.
We know what shower tapware we would show off behind glass doors, and you can find them here.
6. TOWEL RAILS OR ROBE HOOKS ON THE BACK OF DOORS
We are innovation-station here at ABI. For small bathrooms, we think a great place to install your towel rails or robe hooks, is on the back of the door. It systematically blends into the already jutting door handle, without adding any more protrusions to the walls. You can stack towel rails on top of one another with ease, further conserving space and making your bathroom feel bigger! Make sure to attach a stopper to the back of the door to avoid any wall damage.
Our towel rails and hooks come in a range of beautiful colours to match whatever palette you had in mind. You can find towel rails here and robe hooks here!
7. LOTS OF LIGHTING
Do you have cavernous corners, shrouded in darkness because your lighting doesn’t work adequately? Let there be light! Because shadows make a room feel smaller. You deserve a bathroom that you can actually see. When good lighting permeates through a space, its dimensions feel bigger and darkness is given fewer opportunities to cut off any angles.
For the bathroom, we recommend bright, warm lighting. Cool lighting is better for workspaces such as the kitchen and garage and is a little too austere for a cosy bathroom. Get creative! Whether it be pendant lights, strip lighting or around the mirror cabinet you’ve intelligently installed, lighting has ample opportunity in a small bathroom.
Choosing light bathroom colours for wall paint and tiles also helps make the space appear larger.
