The Surrounds: A Modern-Day Treehouse in the Heart of Currumbin
Behind the Design
Perched above the verdant canopy of Currumbin Hinterland, this residence embodies the essence of modern design: a seamless fusion of authentic materials and thoughtful architecture that fully embraces the beauty of its natural surroundings.
“The name truly encapsulates everything,” remarks co-owner Jake. “We were instantly captivated by the natural landscapes, the diverse wildlife, and of course, the breathtaking ocean views.”
Go Behind the Design of The Surrounds
Jake Cumberland and Dakota Hallett, raised in an era straddling digital innovation and a yearning for a simpler, more analog existence, have forged a design vision that resonates across generations.
Rather than stripping an older structure to its bare bones, Jake and Dakota have preserved its inherent charm, transforming it into a modern treehouse reminiscent of its previous life. Dakota's sole directive to Jake was to ensure an "abundance of natural light," which he has undoubtedly delivered.
The façade, clad in crisp white timber battens and accented with natural timber and travertine details, suggests a modest interior. However, this understated exterior serves a deliberate purpose — just enough to pique curiosity without overshadowing the surrounding landscape.
Upon entering, one is greeted by an expansive open-plan living area. The living room exudes warmth with its soft textiles and organic hues — an appetiser to the true focal point and the heart of this design beyond.
The living-dining space epitomises indoor-outdoor living with effortless elegance. Built-in, architectural bench seating and an adjacent kitchen border the seamless flow between the interior and exteriors, leading to a sunlit balcony that overlooks the distant Pacific Ocean. Of course, the entire space is drenched in natural light with its myriad of unobstructed windows.
“Above that built-in seat, you have a large northern void, which has northern sun pouring throughout the day,” says Jake.
While technically the ‘outdoors’, the balcony’s fully covered rooftop and open window sills provide a sense of immersion amidst the native banksias and gum trees while offering a protected, sheltered space — a necessity in the often unpredictable southeast.
Back in the kitchen, Jake and Dakota opted for ABI Interiors’ white tapware, which provides a subtle pop against the timber frames without detracting from the vistas beyond.
“I think for me, with the tapware, the white just really pops,” says Dakota. “We had a lot of inspiration from other architectural homes, and it just looks so beautiful and just classic.”
Upstairs, two guest rooms, a bathroom, and a primary suite invite immediate relaxation, seamlessly integrating with the home's theme of neutral minimalism, enlivened by vibrant yet earthy tile choices. Downstairs, a guest suite and laundry are tucked away, offering just enough separation from the main living area for added privacy.
In the primary ensuite, green 100x100 tiles and green marble on the vanity create a striking contrast with the white bathroom tapware. An arched entryway to the double shower adds a welcomed curve to the otherwise linear design, while a concealed skylight above evokes the sensation of being surrounded by treetops.
“The space really feels calming and complete, especially when you walk through the arch,” says Jake. “It's almost like entering a little cave, and that's our little retreat.”
The secondary bathroom echoes this design ethos but with a pinky-beige and cream palette. Here, the arched dual shower space is replaced by a walk-in wet room.
“It just feels so much like home,” says Dakota. “I've never walked into a property and just had the feeling that you’re just meant to be there.”
“It's almost like it's a little retreat, but it's our home,” agrees Jake. “It’s unbelievable.”
