Zarma: A Mid-Century Modern Marvel Defined by Its Exceptional Open-Plan Living
Behind the Design
Idyllically situated upon the canals of Broadbeach Waters, Zarma is a tranquil retreat that advantageously embraces natural light. Sam Barlow, owner and director of BARLOW Building, wanted to design something distinct from the Gold Coast architectural convention.
We explore this mid-century modern abode's extraordinary open-plan living layout and find out why floor-to-ceiling Italian travertine, a unique central courtyard, and ABI Interiors’ brushed gunmetal tapware were all essential touchstones.
Step Inside Zarma
One of Zarma's welcoming attributes is the abundance of natural light that greets you as you walk through the large glass door entrance.
“The main design feature I wanted [was to let] as much light into the home as we could,” says Sam.
“When we were originally designing Zarma, all of the engineers wanted to put in posts through the centre of the house and not [have] the whole area open. It was one of those things that was a non-negotiable for me.”
This impressive open-plan living includes one of Zarma’s innovative points of difference: a courtyard featuring an olive tree with separate sliding doors that create a unique outside space within the home.
“We decided to do a hardwood timber door around the courtyard. [It] just brought that bit of earthiness into the centre of the house,” continues Sam.
Another hallmark of the home is the mid-century modern kitchen, which features a butler’s pantry with chocolate-toned cabinetry and the central sight of ABI Interiors’ Kitchen Sensor Commercial Mixer in brushed gunmetal. It has an inviting Italian travertine stone island bench and matching backsplash that reaches the ceiling. The travertine seamlessly continues to the outdoor kitchen, where ABI Interiors’ Elysian Kitchen Mixer in clay adds exuberance.
From the waterfront alfresco area, you are presented with the sight of an infinity edge pool that flows out over the beautiful Broadbeach canal.
The convenient downstairs powder room features a uniquely curved shower area clad in handmade Japanese tiles with ABI Interiors’ brushed gunmetal tapware and fixtures throughout. This particular finish was chosen for its striking contemporary appeal.
“[...] and then you walk out to the barbecue, and the travertine sort of carries out through there — it just brings a warmth to the space.”
“We decided to go with the gunmetal finish throughout the whole of Zarma — [as it’s] quite a timeless colour that we feel like is ‘in’ at the moment, but it’s also not something that’s going to date, as well. It’ll look good in the home for years and years to come,” continues Sam.
With a northerly aspect, the master suite at Zarma is unsurprisingly flooded with sunlight throughout the day. A bespoke half-height bedhead contributes to the commanding resort-style ambience, while a large mirror on the adjoining Italian travertine ensuite wall strategically reflects the Gold Coast skyline.
“Above the staircase at Zarma, you’ve got a big circle skylight, which brings in a lot of the light throughout the day.”
Zarma is a luxurious sanctuary that beautifully integrates its lush surroundings while finding innovative ways to bring the outside in.
