Solara: A Modern Mediterranean Haven in the Heart of Brisbane
Behind the Design

Meaning “of the sun,” Solara is a radiant retreat nestled within Brisbane’s inner-west suburb of Ashgrove. A neighbourhood celebrated for its character-filled early 19th century homes — most notably the iconic Ashgrovian-style Queenslanders — Ashgrove might seem an unexpected setting for a residence steeped in coastal Mediterranean charm.
But, in signature Sage & Cove Interiors style, Design and Interior Consultant Ashley embraced the challenge, shaping her vision of a warm, sun-drenched family home that infuses the area with a fresh, global perspective.
Anticipated to be one of Brisbane’s most sought-after suburbs in 2025, in Ashley’s eyes, Ashgrove was a no-brainer.
“This is our fifth build in Ashgrove — we love the area,” says Ashley.
With its softly rendered white façade, a striking three-metre natural stone archway, and bold black arched window detailing, Solara is an audacious statement within a traditionally heritage-rich streetscape.
“When designing the façade for Solara, I wanted it to have a lot of impact when you're driving down the street. And it definitely stands out among all the post-war homes in the area. It has that wow factor,” says Ashley.
“We chose to go with a Mediterranean-inspired home because we love all the warm textures and design elements from the Mediterranean lifestyle.”

Stepping inside, you’re greeted with a flood of warmth. Neutral oak flooring and subtly curved walls usher you through the foyer and down into the main kitchen and living area.
“We’ve used lots of curves throughout Solara just to soften all the corners in the home, which accentuates the Mediterranean theme throughout the property,” Ashley explains.
“We've also used lots of natural stones throughout the home: travertine and lots of crazy pave in the outdoor alfresco.”

The kitchen showcases Boston Oak cabinetry, complemented by a seamlessly integrated coffee bar to the left and a hidden butler's pantry beyond. On the back wall, a cut-out backsplash frames the curved rangehood, adorned with off-white square mosaics — an understated yet distinctive touch.
But the true showstopper? A scalloped white onyx countertop — a masterpiece of texture and elegance that anchors the entire space.
“I wanted it to be a wow factor when you walked in — especially with the scallop detail on the island bench,” says Ashley.

“In this build, we went with the brushed copper tapware because it complements all the different natural stones we’ve chosen in our wet areas,” she explains.
“We have four different natural stones throughout, and the copper just really popped and added a luxe feel.”

While modern Mediterranean interior design often leans toward more beige, grounding palettes, Ashley infused each bathroom with its own distinct personality, staying true to her personal style. From statement mirrors to bespoke cabinetry handles and carefully selected wall sconces, every detail was thoughtfully chosen to create a sense of individuality within each space.
“Each bathroom within Solara has custom stone vanities — each room having its own personality,” says Ashley.
“In the main bathroom (pictured above), we have the Monreale marble to give it a little pop of colour.”

True to Ashley’s design philosophy, each space is layered with thoughtful materiality. Upstairs, the guest ensuite reintroduces the luminous white onyx from the kitchen, its soft veining juxtaposed with the bold presence of brushed copper in the Elysian Minimal Mixer & Spout Set and Bottle Trap Round. The warm mocha tones of the adjoining room’s bedframe create a seamless dialogue between spaces — an interplay of contrast and cohesion.

The primary suite is a sanctuary of warmth and serenity, where rust-orange hues and Mediterranean home decor infuse the space with depth and character. Through an arched entryway — clad in the same neutral square mosaic tiles as the rangehood — you step into a refined retreat that balances tranquillity with sophistication.

In the ensuite, a feature wall of mismatched beige and white Zellige tiles introduces organic texture, while the remaining walls are wrapped in classic beige travertine, a nod to authentic Mediterranean craftsmanship. Continuing the home’s signature design language, the dual-basin vanity showcases scalloped white onyx, its fluid curves echoing the softness of the space.
Above the vanity, a pair of Hail Mirrors by Rachel Donath stand with quiet elegance, their playful circular forms mirroring the sculptural cabinetry handles below.

Brushed copper tapware — particularly the Namika Minimal Mixers — enriches the Mediterranean-inspired palette, its warm, subtle sheen catching the natural light that streams through the windows, adding depth and dimension to the space.
“We chose the beautiful Namika tapware for our ensuite just to give it a point of difference. We loved the ribbed tapware, which went beautifully with the scalloped edge on the vanities,” says Ashley.
“We used ABI with our last build, and, having a plumber as a husband, he’s very particular about what tapware we put in our wet areas. So, it was a no-brainer; we went with ABI again because of the quality and customer service.”

Outside, a resort-inspired entertaining area beckons, featuring a spacious covered terrace that seamlessly flows into a lush, tropical pool oasis.
“When designing the home, the outdoor living space was a big factor,” says Ashley.
“We just wanted it to be luxe, resort-like, and easy for us all to sit back on the weekends and enjoy together.”
Just 5km from the CBD, Solara feels worlds away. Its sun-drenched presence is more reminiscent of a Mediterranean seaside retreat than an inner-city enclave. With its effortless warmth and playful design, the home embodies the unmistakable essence of Sage & Cove — playful accents and coastal charm that exude warmth and comfort.
More than just a statement, Solara is a testament to the idea that great design isn’t bound by rules — it’s simply a reflection of how you choose to live and what brings you joy.
