The Latest Tile Trends in 2024

Tile-Trends

Tile trends have ebbed and flowed and can date back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egyptian eras. While their primary function has remained unchanged, the techniques, colours, and styles of tiles have shifted to reflect the regions and eras of their creation. Today, contemporary tiles display sophisticated expressions of style and personality, seamlessly blending historical influences with modern aesthetics.

With social media constantly shaping trends, keeping up with the latest interior design can be challenging. To help you navigate, we’ve compiled some of the latest tile trends in 2024 so far. From travertine to mosaics and KitKat tiles, read on to discover the styles at the forefront of tile design.

Tile Trends: Stone

Stone’s enduring popularity since ancient times underscores its status as a timeless choice for tiles and flooring. While Terrazzo, marble, and granite have seen their fair share of fluctuations in their favour, recent shifts in stone preferences show modern trends emphasising low maintenance, durability, and economic adaptability.

Another increasingly popular option is stone-look tiles. These tiles are made from ceramics, porcelain, and other engineered materials and are designed to replicate the appearance of genuine natural stones. They offer a cost-effective and low-maintenance alternative for those who prefer the look of natural stone without the associated upkeep.

The most significant advantage of stone in all its various forms is its versatility throughout the house. Whether you’re seeking a natural, grounding bathroom tile idea for a serene spa-like space, a kitchen floor tile that blends seamlessly into a backsplash, or exterior tiles that create a cohesive indoor-outdoor design, stone is the ideal choice.

At ABI, our boutique natural stone mosaic selection features the Oyama Natural Stone Square Mosaic, Saroma Natural Stone Mosaic in marble green, Nishi Inverted Finger Mosaic, Kasai Stone Mosaic, and the Hakkari Collection, available in ice grey, black, tundra grey, and pewter grey.

However, in recent years, limestone, travertine, and concrete — though not technically stones — have undeniably surged in popularity, topping the list for trending stone tiles in 2024.

Tile Trends: Limestone

Pietra-HR-02

Limestone tiles are formed from organic materials like shells and coral that have accumulated over millions of years. They feature a soft, earthy palette in beige and grey shades and are available in various finishes, such as polished or honed, each providing a distinct look and texture.

Given its versatility, it's no surprise that limestone is topping the latest floor tile trends. However, due to their porous nature, limestone tiles require proper sealing to prevent scratching, especially compared to more durable stones like granite.

At ABI, we offer two distinct limestone collections. The Minori Limestone Floor Tile features authentic limestone floor tiles in a subtle beige finish. It has been sand-blasted for enhanced slip resistance, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like swimming pools and commercial spaces. The Lucca Collection offers a limestone-look in durable porcelain. It is highly resistant to stains, scratches, and moisture, and comes in beige and light grey.

Tile Trends: Travertine

Encanto-04

Traditionally found in the Mediterranean, travertine is a type of limestone deposited by mineral-rich hot springs. Its proximity to the hot springs causes water erosion on the stone, creating travertine’s signature porous texture — a fundamental part of its allure.

Travertine has been used as a building material for centuries. The Romans used it to build everything from amphitheatres to aqueducts, including the iconic Colosseum. Like any natural stone, its innate durability and resistance to wear and tear make it ideal for indoor and outdoor use, especially in harsher climates.

At ABI, we have various travertine options to suit diverse design needs. The Nazilli Collection showcases large-format tiles in genuine grey travertine stone, ideal for expansive wall and floor applications. Our Ravello range includes square mosaics, and finger tiles—both inverted and rounded—but more on those later.

The Izmir Collection is our travertine-look range made from durable porcelain in a light beige finish. Similar to our Lucca limestone-look tiles, the Izmir tiles are highly resistant to stains, scratches, and moisture.

Our boutique collection of travertine tiles, perfect for kitchen backsplash tiles or laundry tiles, includes the Oyama Travertine Square Mosaic.

Tile Trends: Concrete

Rising to prominence in the mid-20th century, concrete has transformed from a purely functional material used in industrial settings to a coveted aesthetic choice in modern interior design. Available in various finishes such as polished, rendered, and stained, concrete's sleek, minimalist look and remarkable durability have made it a preferred option for residential and commercial spaces.

Our Arrezzo Collection features porcelain tiles that mimic the appearance of concrete. These tiles are available in multiple sizes and colours, such as bone, beige, dark grey, and light grey, and provide outstanding versatility. Although they complement industrial-inspired interiors, they seamlessly integrate into modern, minimalist, and contemporary styles.

Tile Trends: Zellige Tiles

Tiles-Studio-Textured-2

Zellige tiles, celebrated for their handcrafted quality and vibrant colours, originated in medieval Morocco. They were made from local clay and finished with a glossy glaze. Traditionally featured in Islamic architecture, their intricate patterns symbolise unity and infinity, adding beauty and functionality to mosques, palaces, and courtyards.

As many modern design enthusiasts turn to traditional techniques, Zellige tiles have been experiencing a resurgence over the past decade. Alongside the rise of modern Mediterranean design in the 2020s, Zellige tiles have gained popularity as ideal choices for kitchen backsplashes and bars and as a significant bathroom tile trends for 2024.

Our Rommani Collection was created as a reflection of this movement. It features two sizes (100x100 and 50x150) and ten vibrant colours to suit any style or personality. In honour of the ancient craft, each Rommani Zellige tile is meticulously handmade, using traditional clay moulding techniques, and hand-glazed, ensuring no two tiles are identical. This dedication to artisanal techniques guarantees that our tiles will bring elegance and creativity to any space.

Tile Trends: 3D Tiles

Pietra-HR-15

3D tiles offer a tactile departure from traditional flat surfaces by embracing modern trends reflecting textured aesthetics. While available in materials like ceramic, porcelain, and glass, natural stone variants are currently significantly impacting interior design.

3D tiles' ability to add visual interest and depth makes them increasingly popular in bathroom design. Their textured surfaces create dynamic patterns and reflect light in intriguing ways, enhancing the space's brightness and ambience. With various shapes and styles, 3D tiles offer unique, customisable design options while also helping conceal minor imperfections.

Our 3D tile offerings include the Ravello, Okawa, Nishi, and Verona styles, each designed to elevate interior spaces with unique 3D textures.
The Ravello Collection features genuine travertine tiles with rounded and inverted finger mosaics, showcasing a natural edge and a striking 3D stone aesthetic. The Verona Terrazzo Rounded Finger Mosaic offers a contemporary 3D made from genuine travertine to provide a modern and versatile option. As the names suggest, both our Ravello and Verona tiles are inspired by the Mediterranean, making these two particular styles perfect for coastal or Mediterranean-inspired homes.

The Okawa Rounded Finger Mosaic is crafted from honed natural marble, highlighting distinctive variations in texture, colour, and veining. Finally, the Nishi Inverted Finger Mosaic features a natural edge and finish, enhancing walls with its sophisticated 3D appearance.

Tile Trends: KitKat Tiles

Billi-Palms-HR-05

KitKat tiles, also known as finger tiles due to their elongated, rectangular shape, emerged as a design staple in the 1970s and 1980s, quickly becoming famous for their sleek, minimalist aesthetic. Named after their resemblance to the famous KitKat chocolate bar segments, these tiles are available in ceramic, stone, porcelain, and glass.

In the mid-2000s, KitKat tiles gained renewed popularity due to their sleek, uniform look, aligned with the 'transitional' interior design trend. However, as design trends have shifted towards natural textures and tones, finger tiles are now crafted with rustic charm and intricate detailing. This evolution adds character and intrigue to modern spaces, and it is evident in the latest kitchen, bathroom, and pool tile trends.

Teracotta- -Brass- -Almond

At ABI, we offer a wide range of KitKat and finger tiles, many featuring materials and textures highlighted in this blog. Our stone finger tiles include the Ravello Travertine Rounded Finger and Ravello Travertine Inverted Finger Mosaic, the Okawa Rounded Finger Mosaic in grey marble, the Verona Terrazzo Rounded Finger Mosaic in white, and the Nishi Inverted Finger Mosaic in almond. The Imari Speckle Finger Tile, influenced by Japanese design, comes in gloss white or latte, while our ceramic Yama Kit Kat Mosaic features an antique faded off-white centre with vignetted edges and a semi-gloss finish for a timeless, aged appearance.

Tile Trends: Vibrant Colours

Indie-and-Co-HR-6-1080x1620-71e7c34

After a long period of dominance, white and grey-neutral tiles are gradually returning, though they will always be relevant in interior design. In their place, colourful and patterned tiles make a striking comeback, bringing a fresh vibrancy and personality to modern spaces.

What’s particularly captivating is how designers creatively integrate colourful tiles into their spaces. Whether as a striking feature in a shower, a dynamic backsplash in the kitchen, or a distinctive pedestal beside your sofa or bed, the possibilities for showcasing tiles are virtually limitless.

The latest trends in bathroom wall tiles for coastal and estate homes, bold blues, such as cobalt, navy, and bright turquoise, as well as rich greens, such as emerald and forest, are rising to prominence for their sense of natural serenity and luxury.

In mid-century modern or Mediterranean settings, the latest kitchen and bathroom tile trends continue to favour detailed mosaics and classic spice tones like vivid reds, desert pinks, and saffron yellows, infusing spaces with vibrant energy and warmth. Meanwhile, retro and minimalist homes are adopting Pantone’s Colour of the Year, ‘Peach Fuzz,’ alongside various shades of orange and red to introduce a playful and creative flair, particularly for those looking for creative kitchen backsplash tile and laundry tile ideas.

These vibrant hues are complemented by trending neutrals, including muted latte browns, beige, and sage greens, offering a balanced but more nuanced palette than in previous years.
