Inside The Block Kitchens 2024
Kitchen Week is arguably the biggest and most important week on The Block 2024. This year, ABI Interiors has proudly partnered with Kinsman Kitchens, official sponsors of The Block, to supply contestants with high-quality tapware and fixtures for their kitchens and laundries.
As the heart of the home, kitchens are a major selling point for potential buyers. A thoughtfully designed kitchen goes beyond being a functional space for cooking and dining. In these five luxurious holiday homes, the kitchen will serve as a central gathering and entertaining area for family and friends — set against the idyllic backdrop of Phillip Island.
With $10,000 in prize money and a Ford getaway at W Melbourne’s ‘Extreme WOW Suite’ up for grabs, the Blockheads were all determined to go above and beyond. Each team delivered an exceptional kitchen that reflected their own unique style, and The Block judges Shaynna, Darren, and Marty were thrilled to see each room was finished to a high standard.
House 1’s Maddy and Charlotte looked poised to take the win, scoring the first 10 of the season, until Kylie and Brad made a bold move — playing their Penguin bonus point to secure the win by just half a point in this all-important week.
Here’s where the teams stood after judging:
- House 4: Kylie and Brad scored 29.5
- House 1: Maddy and Charlotte scored 29
- House 2: Courtney and Grant scored 27
- House 5: Kristian and Mimi scored 26.5
- House 3: Ricky and Haydn scored 23
Read on to discover each of The Block kitchens in detail and what the judges had to say. Which one is your favourite?
House 1 | Maddy and Charlotte
Sydney sisters Maddy and Charlotte entered The Block 2024 in dramatic fashion, taking over House 1 following Jesse and Paige’s exit in week five. At just 25 and 22, they're also the youngest ever Blockheads – but the seasoned property flippers have quickly proved they’re not to be underestimated.
While Jesse and Paige had already designed and ordered nearly everything for the kitchen in week two, the sisters still managed to put their spin on it. Moving away from their predecessors' modern colonial style, Maddy and Charlotte’s elevated coastal kitchen is a beautiful blend of natural textures, neutral tones, and understated elegance. Walking into the space, the judges were smiling from ear to ear.
“Wow. This is stunning!” exclaimed Marty.
Darren agreed, saying the kitchen perfectly encapsulates the holiday house look and feel and has been thoughtfully designed — with excellent storage and entertainment in mind.
Shaynna is equally impressed by the smooth, quartzite stone benchtops, declaring, “This is the most beautiful natural stone. It almost looks like crystal – divine!”
The judges loved the combination of the Herringbone flooring and Kinsman Kitchens’ shaker-style oak cabinetry, which add a traditional touch and evoke a calm and inviting atmosphere.
“This feels lived-in, this feels homely, and it does not feel overdone whatsoever,” says Marty. “This is marketable, and this won’t date.”
Maddy and Charlotte chose the Elysian Commercial Pull Out Kitchen Mixer in our new AntiquePVD Aurum finish to match their tapware to their antique brass cabinetry handles. Merging artisanal craftsmanship with the timeless sophistication of antique, textured brass, this finish stands out against their neutral palette without overpowering the refined aesthetic.
Delivery delays had the girls fighting the clock, so we flew an ABI team member down from the Gold Coast to hand-deliver their tap just in time for the final reveal.
“This tapware is divine,” gushes Shaynna. “It’s tumbled brass – it’s got that beautiful finish and that antique look to it.”
The sisters also used our Vienna Double Sink 760mm in White Granite and Sink Basket Waste in Brushed Brass to complete their island bench setup. The judges’ only feedback for Maddy and Charlotte was the placement of their kitchen sink, which Shaynna felt was too close to the ovens and pantry. Nevertheless, she says they “hit it out of the park without a doubt”.
House 2 | Courtney and Grant
Going from strength to strength with two winning rooms so far, Courtney and Grant's opulent entertainer's kitchen is in keeping with their home’s ‘Moditerannean’ style. The space oozes luxury, with high-end features including a full-size wine fridge, Bluetooth induction cooktop, built-in coffee machine, and no less than three integrated ovens.
“Woah,” Darren exclaimed. “This is unreal!”
“I’m actually salivating,” Shaynna added.
The judges loved how warm and inviting the kitchen feels — complete with Kinsman Kitchens’ rich walnut cabinetry, ABI Interiors’ elegant brushed brass sinks, and an enormous 4-metre-long porcelain stone island. The pair selected our Vari Single Sink 750mm for the kitchen and Seba Kitchen Sink for the butler’s pantry.
These warm, golden tones are continued in the cabinetry handles, pendant lights, and the subtle gold veining of the benchtops — which Darren can’t stop touching.
“It’s next level and divine,” Shaynna said. “The talent in styling here is off the charts.”
Marty, on the other hand, felt the kitchen wasn’t cohesive with the ‘Moditerannean’ style of their other rooms and didn’t showcase the same level of sophistication he’d come to expect from them. Darren and Shaynna couldn’t disagree with him more.
“I’m besotted by the colour scheme, the materiality, and the decisions they’ve made for drama and impact,” says Darren.
The one thing the judges all agreed on was that Courtney and Grant’s choice to include just three bench seats in such a large space was a mistake.
House 3 | Ricky and Haydn
Ricky and Haydn’s minimalist, coastal kitchen presents a bright, airy design that uses a neutral palette and abundant natural light to create a calm, functional space.
Sleek white stone countertops, timber panelling, and Kinsman Kitchens' oak cabinetry introduce a subtle pattern and soft texture into the space without overwhelming the simplicity of their design.
The judges were very pleased that the boys managed to finish their kitchen this week and felt the coastal design was ideally suited to its tropical Phillip Island locale. They applauded the boys for their choice of coastal oak cabinetry and brushed copper details.
“It works beautifully with these floors and lights – those elements together just feel really perfect for this house,” said Darren.
“It is very coastal, very Phillip Island,” Shaynna agreed.
A generous, 3.8-metre-long curved island is an entertainer’s dream. The entire surface is free of a sink or cooktop, which the boys thoughtfully positioned on the adjacent benchtop.
“This is easily the biggest kitchen we’ve seen today,” said Marty. “If I was to invite all my friends over and entertain, I’ve got the ability to do so.”
Ricky and Haydn selected ABI’s brushed copper tapware, pairing the Elysian Commercial Pull-Out Kitchen Mixer with the Vienna Single Sink 630mm in White Granite in both their kitchen and butler’s pantry. Shaynna then delivered some tough feedback for the boys.
“It’s not functional,” she said, pointing out the placement of the main appliances right in front of the walkway.
“One of the biggest faux pas you can do when designing a kitchen,” Marty adds.
Shaynna was also unimpressed with Ricky and Haydn’s styling and recommended they start looking on Instagram and Pinterest for tips on creating a well-styled room.
“We always say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and this heart needs a little bit of a defibrillator,” Shaynna states.
House 4 | Kylie and Brad
With a distinct style and a love for all-black everything, Kylie and Brad are determined to give House 4 a unique look — targeting a market that isn't looking for a typical beach shack. Kylie hopes the kitchen will showcase “our entire style in one room.”
Kylie’s signature dark colour palette anchors the design, with Kinsman Kitchens’ matte black cabinetry and integrated appliances creating a bold, elegant backdrop for our brushed brass Elysian Sensor Commercial Pull-Out Kitchen Mixer and Vari Single Sink — which the couple happily snagged from The Vault.
“This is moody and sexy. This is on the money,” Darren declared as soon as he entered the room.
“It feels very expensive,” Marty agreed, admiring their minimalist approach to both the design and styling. “It is so simple, yet so luxurious.”
The galley kitchen’s striking, dark marble island serves as the focal point of the space. These sultry surfaces are beautifully contrasted by the warmth of the timber flooring and Christian Cole tractor stools that line the island. As the judges begin to question the potential lack of storage, they stumble upon the hidden FurnSpin cupboards.
“That’s hot,” Shaynna exclaimed. “This is Tom Ford meets James Bond.”
Lighting plays a crucial role in House 4’s dark design, with large windows on either side of the kitchen ensuring the moody space is flooded with natural light. The judge’s only concern is the absence of a dedicated appliance cupboard, but agree it’s something Kylie and Brad could tweak during Laundry Week by adding an additional service area.
Overall, Shaynna sums it up with: “You have found your sweet spot. This is perfection.”
House 5 | Kristian and Mimi
With four winning rooms so far, Adelaide’s Kristian and Mimi have cemented themselves as the ones to beat. The judges have come to expect a high standard from the couple — and luckily, their kitchen did not disappoint.
“Kristian and Mimi don’t let us down, do they?” asked Darren.
As the only upstairs kitchen on The Block, the couple’s minimalist modern-contemporary kitchen is flooded with natural light thanks to three overhead skylights and a window overlooking the pool in place of a traditional splashback. Complete with a walk-in pantry, two integrated fridges, and timeless chevron timber flooring, the space exudes a clean and modern feel while maintaining a cosy, lived-in ambience.
The judges love the combination of the Dekton stone countertops, Kinsman Kitchens walnut cabinetry, and ABI Interiors’ brushed copper fixtures. Kristian and Mimi paired our Elysian Pull Out Commercial Kitchen Mixer with our Vari Single Sink 750mm for their island bench.
“As a mix, how yum!” said Darren. “Yum, yum, yum.”
The judges’ eyes are then drawn to the elephant in the room: the olive green — or, as Mimi calls it, “Shrek” green — Smeg rangehood and freestanding oven.
“I’m really unsure about the colour,” said Marty. “When you segregate the market in the most expensive room of your campaign, it’s risky, and I think this is a risk they shouldn’t necessarily have taken.”
He also isn’t a fan of the fridge placement in the butler’s pantry, finding it too far from the sink and prep areas. Shaynn and Darren agree on the questionable layout, but both love the ‘shock value’ of the green oven.
“It’s about giving you something you didn’t know you wanted,” Shaynna explains. “That green with that walnut says mid-century, and Phillip Island is full of fibro houses that are mid-century.”
Overall, the judges were thoroughly impressed by what each house had created.
“These kitchens have been absolutely stunning,” concludes Shaynna. “We haven’t seen one house that is anything like the other.”
“That’s why I love Kitchen Week — because it’s so unique and different!”
